CNC Setter/Programmer

Set up CNC turning machines for precision components, obtain first-piece approval and maintain stable production as per drawing, quality and output requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Machine Setup
• Set CNC turning machines according to the production plan and approved setup sheet.
• Install and align tools, tool holders, collets, chucks, jaws and workholding fixtures.
• Set tool geometry, work offsets and wear offsets correctly.
• Set bar feeders and component catchers wherever applicable.
• Program Verification and Trials
• Load the approved CNC program and verify it against the drawing and setup requirements.
• Conduct safe prove-out using single-block operation and controlled feed/rapid overrides.
• Make authorized offset and minor program corrections; coordinate major changes with the CNC Programmer.
• Verify clearances and secure workholding before starting production.
• First-Piece Approval and Quality
• Produce trial components and check dimensions, threads, surface finish and burrs.
• Obtain first-piece approval from Quality before releasing the machine for production.
• Follow the control plan and inspection frequency during production.
• Stop production and escalate abnormalities; identify and segregate suspect components.
• Production and Tool-Life Control
• Achieve approved cycle time and production targets while maintaining quality.
• Monitor tool wear, replace tools at defined intervals and record tool life.
• Reduce setup time, startup rejection and tool-related downtime.
• Troubleshoot dimensional variation, chatter, poor finish, burrs and tool breakage.
• Operator Support and Shift Handover
• Guide operators on loading, inspection, tool-wear identification and escalation.
• Hand over approved settings, inspection requirements and tool-change instructions.
• Record setup details, corrections, downtime and pending issues for the next shift.
• Machine Care and Safety
• Check lubrication, coolant, clamping and machine condition before operation.
• Coordinate breakdowns and recurring alarms with Maintenance.
• Follow safe working practices, maintain 5S and never bypass machine interlocks.

Qualification and Experience

• ITI in Turner, Machinist, CNC or a related trade; Diploma in Mechanical Engineering also suitable.
• Preferably 3–5 years of hands-on CNC turning setup experience.
• Experience in small precision components, preferably brass components.
• Working knowledge of Fanuc and/or Siemens controllers.
• Experience with bar feeders and high-volume production preferred.

Required Technical Skills

• Reading engineering drawings, tolerances and surface-finish requirements.
• Tool selection for turning, drilling, boring, grooving, threading and tapping.
• Understanding CNC G-codes, M-codes, tool offsets and cutting parameters.
• Using micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, pin gauges and thread gauges.
• Identifying setup and tooling causes of rejection and downtime.
