About the Role

We are looking for a dedicated, patient, enthusiastic, and child-friendly home tutor to support the academic development of our 8-year-old son studying under the IB curriculum at TIPS School.

The ideal candidate should be able to strengthen his foundational concepts, improve his language skills, encourage independent reading, and prepare him for the SilverZone Olympiad examinations conducted at school.

Our primary objective is not merely to complete homework or prepare for examinations, but to develop a genuine interest in learning, independent thinking, confidence, and consistent academic improvement.

  • Key ResponsibilitiesA. English – Vocabulary and Reading Skills
  • Improve vocabulary, spelling, word usage, and sentence formation.
  • Encourage reading of age-appropriate storybooks and graded readers.
  • Develop reading comprehension, fluency, and the ability to express ideas clearly.
  • Introduce new words through stories, games, conversations, and practical activities.
  • Encourage the child to read independently instead of depending on the teacher or parents.

B. Mathematics – Conceptual Understanding

  • Strengthen fundamental mathematical concepts in accordance with the IB curriculum.
  • Focus on understanding the logic behind mathematical operations rather than memorising procedures.
  • Develop problem-solving, mental mathematics, logical reasoning, and numerical confidence.
  • Use visual aids, manipulatives, puzzles, real-life examples, and interactive activities.
  • Identify learning gaps and provide individualised practice.
  • Encourage the child to explain his reasoning and solve problems independently.

C. Tamil – Reading and Writing

  • Improve Tamil letter recognition, reading fluency, and pronunciation.
  • Develop the ability to read age-appropriate Tamil words, sentences, and short passages.
  • Improve handwriting, spelling, dictation, and sentence writing.
  • Encourage regular reading and writing practice suited to his current proficiency.
  • Make Tamil learning engaging through stories, simple books, and language activities.

D. SilverZone Olympiad Preparation

  • Prepare the child for the relevant SilverZone Olympiad examinations conducted through the school.
  • Identify the specific Olympiad subjects and examination requirements.
  • Strengthen subject knowledge, logical reasoning, analytical thinking, and application-based problem-solving.
  • Use age-appropriate practice questions, worksheets, mock tests, and previous-year papers where available.
  • Track progress and gradually improve accuracy, speed, and confidence without creating excessive examination pressure.

E. Independent Reading and Learning Habits

  • Develop a daily habit of independent reading.
  • Encourage curiosity, questioning, exploration, and self-directed learning.
  • Teach the child to attempt questions independently before seeking help.
  • Develop concentration, time management, organisation, and completion of tasks.
  • Encourage the child to take responsibility for his learning and gradually become less dependent on adult supervision.

F. Motivation and Holistic Development

  • Make learning enjoyable through games, storytelling, quizzes, puzzles, and hands-on activities.
  • Build confidence through positive reinforcement and constructive feedback.
  • Motivate the child to set small, achievable learning goals.
  • Recognise effort, curiosity, improvement, and perseverance—not just marks.
  • Avoid corporal punishment, humiliation, excessive pressure, and rote-learning-only methods.
  • Maintain a supportive learning environment that nurtures the child's natural curiosity.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Graduate or postgraduate qualification; a B.Ed. or relevant teaching qualification is preferred.
  • Experience teaching primary school children, preferably Grades 2–4.
  • Familiarity with the IB/PYP approach, inquiry-based learning, and conceptual teaching is an advantage.
  • Strong proficiency in English, Mathematics, and Tamil.
  • Previous experience preparing children for SilverZone or similar Olympiads is desirable.
  • Good communication skills, patience, creativity, and a genuine interest in child development.

Expected Teaching Approach

The tutor should

  • Follow the child's school curriculum and coordinate with parents regarding academic needs.
  • Prepare structured but flexible learning sessions.
  • Balance schoolwork, skill development, reading, and Olympiad practice.
  • Use interactive, activity-based methods instead of lengthy worksheets alone.
  • Assess progress periodically and adjust the teaching approach according to the child's needs.
  • Provide regular feedback to parents on strengths, difficulties, and improvements.

Expected Outcomes

Within the first few months, the tutor should aim to achieve measurable improvement in

  • English vocabulary, comprehension, and independent reading.
  • Mathematical conceptual clarity and independent problem-solving.
  • Tamil reading fluency, spelling, and writing.
  • Olympiad readiness, reasoning skills, and examination confidence.
  • Concentration, self-confidence, and willingness to learn independently.
  • A consistent reading habit and a positive attitude towards learning.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are looking for a teacher who is more than a conventional home tutor—a mentor who can understand the child's learning style, inspire curiosity, make difficult concepts simple, and help him enjoy the process of learning.

The ultimate goal is to help our child become a confident, curious, independent learner who develops strong academic foundations and a lifelong love of reading.
