Job Overview

Genea is looking for a Software Engineering Manager (Video Streaming) to lead the team building Genea Video, our cloud-native video solution built directly into the Genea security platform alongside access control and visitor management. Genea Video lets customers connect compatible RTSP cameras through the Genea Gateway (an on-site NVIDIA Jetson appliance that runs AI at the edge) or stream supported Axis cameras straight to the cloud. Customers can then watch live view and recorded playback, build camera walls, search across every camera with AI, and see the door and badge event behind every clip. You will own the engineering of this video streaming pipeline end to end, from camera ingest and edge processing to cloud storage, playback and search, and participate in the full SDLC from system analysis to testing and deployment. This hybrid engineering role combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, building high quality, high performance software alongside a great team.

What you would do, day-to-day?

  • Lead and grow the team building Genea Video, from camera ingest and edge processing to cloud storage, playback and search.
  • Have a keen eye on code quality, with scalability, maintainability and readability in mind.
  • Have a solution-oriented mindset and design high-load, low-latency video streaming systems that scale across thousands of cameras and locations.
  • Estimate and delegate work across streaming, edge (Genea Gateway) and web/mobile client workstreams.
  • Manage the people on a large engineering team to keep them aligned and focused on achieving the team’s goals.
  • Drive the design, strategy, and execution of video projects that support the Genea Video roadmap, including live view, recorded playback, camera walls, clip export and camera management.
  • Lead the architecture of the video pipeline: RTSP ingest through the Genea Gateway, Axis Camera-to-Cloud streaming, transcoding, adaptive delivery, storage and retention.
  • Oversee the daily activities and progress of multiple SCRUM teams working on Genea Video.
  • Monitor, and continuously update, team metrics for engineering and operational excellence, including stream reliability, latency, uptime and cost per camera. Ensure a consistent, regular process for assessing goals and improving deliveries.
  • Lead SCRUM teams through estimating engineering effort to build new features, such as AI-powered search and security automations, and to fix prior mistakes.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and the Access Control and Visitor Management teams to link video to door and badge events and deliver one unified platform experience.
  • Implement a data-driven approach to execution to drive transparency, and partner with DevOps and Support to keep video services reliable around the clock.

What are we looking for?

  • 8+ years of total experience and 3+ years of relevant work experience as team lead
  • Experience in microservice and event driven architecture.
  • Proficient in backend technologies, preferably JavaScript, but we’re open to other technologies such as Go, Python or C++.
  • Hands-on experience with video streaming technologies and protocols such as RTSP, WebRTC, HLS/DASH and RTMP, and with video codecs such as H.264 and H.265.
  • Experience building or managing media pipelines for live and recorded video: ingest, transcoding, adaptive bitrate delivery, recording, storage and retention (for example, with FFmpeg or GStreamer).
  • Experience with edge computing and on-device AI/computer vision. Familiarity with NVIDIA Jetson or similar embedded platforms is a plus.
  • Understanding of IP camera ecosystems (RTSP, ONVIF, Axis) and VMS/NVR concepts, and of video security use cases such as video linked to access control events.
  • Experience designing for low latency, high throughput and cost-efficient storage, with observability for stream health (uptime, latency, dropped frames).
  • Proficient in frontend technologies, preferably React, but we’re open to any other JavaScript-based frameworks like Angular, Vue, etc. Experience building browser-based video players and live view/playback interfaces is a plus.
  • Proficient in database technologies like MongoDB or RDBMS (We use PostgreSQL)
  • Excellent understanding of software development life cycles (SDLC) with experience guiding teams through planning, development, and rollout using best in industry agile practices
  • Having experience in work estimation and delegation is preferable.
  • Understanding of testing practices like writing unit/integration test cases
  • Strong Articulation skills - Ability to write/explain complex problems over email or call.
  • Obsession for excellence - Should strive for being excellent at work in terms of quality and speed.
  • Professionalism - Sincere, Integrity, Commitment, O
