Role Overview
We are hiring a hands-on Team Lead to design, build, and run the backend of our digital banking and payments products. You will lead a small team building Java and Spring Boot microservices, Apache Kafka event pipelines, and PostgreSQL data models that move real money for banks and their customers.
The role is backend-first, with full stack ownership: you will also guide ReactJS and Next.js frontends that sit on top of these services. You will own the full lifecycle, from requirement analysis and system design to production deployment, monitoring, and 24x7 support.
We want someone who treats correctness, auditability, and uptime as product features.
Key Responsibilities
A. Backend and Microservices Development
- Design and build scalable, high-performance backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
- Design and implement RESTful APIs, microservices, and third-party integrations with clear, versioned API contracts.
- Implement authentication, authorization, input validation, and secure coding practices across all services.
- Write clean, maintainable, and testable code, backed by unit, integration, and API tests.
B. Event-Driven Architecture with Apache Kafka
- Build and maintain event-driven systems using Kafka producers, consumers, and Kafka Streams.
- Design event schemas, topics, partitioning, and retention to match business flows.
- Ensure exactly-once or idempotent processing so no event is lost or applied twice.
- Handle retries, dead-letter topics, consumer lag, and replay for failed or delayed events.
- Apply patterns such as Outbox, Saga, event sourcing, and CQRS where they fit.
C. PostgreSQL Data Design and Management
- Design normalized, transactional data models in PostgreSQL for accounts, ledgers, payments, and customers.
- Use ACID transactions, appropriate isolation levels, and row-level locking to keep balances correct under concurrent load.
- Tune queries, indexes, partitioning, and connection pooling for high-volume tables.
- Manage schema changes safely with versioned migrations (Flyway or Liquibase) and zero-downtime deployment.
- Plan data archival, backup, point-in-time recovery, and read replicas for reporting.
D. Full Stack Ownership
- Guide and contribute to responsive web applications built with ReactJS, Next.js, and TypeScript.
- Integrate frontend applications with backend services and keep API contracts in sync.
- Optimize end-to-end performance, responsiveness, and reliability.
E. Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and support developers in daily technical work.
- Break business requirements into technical specifications, tasks, and delivery plans.
- Assign work, track progress, and deliver milestones on time.
- Run code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical design reviews.
- Participate in sprint planning, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Coordinate with Product, QA, UI/UX, DevOps, Business, and Management teams.
- Support technical interviews, onboarding, and knowledge sharing.
F. Deployment and Production Support
- Use Git-based workflows, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines for builds and releases.
- Own production health: troubleshoot incidents, fix performance bottlenecks, and lead root-cause analysis.
- Maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and deployment procedures.
G. AI-Assisted Development
- Use AI coding tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or Cursor for code, tests, debugging, and documentation.
- Review and validate all AI-generated output before it reaches production.
Designing and Maintaining Banking Products
Designing Banking Products
- Ledger-first design: build double-entry ledgers in PostgreSQL where every debit has a matching credit and balances can always be rebuilt from entries.
- Transaction integrity: use idempotency keys, unique transaction references, and state machines so a request retried by a customer, bank, or network never posts twice.
- Payment flows: design end-to-end flows for UPI, IMPS, NEFT, RTGS, and card or wallet payments, including timeouts, pending states, reversals, and refunds.
- Distributed consistency: keep data consistent across microservices with Outbox, Saga, and compensating transactions instead of distributed locks.
- Core banking integration: integrate with core banking systems such as Oracle FLEXCUBE or Finacle, NPCI and switch interfaces, and partner bank APIs.
- Product configuration: model savings and current accounts, loans, deposits, and wallets so limits, charges, interest, and rules are configuration rather than code changes.
- Customer lifecycle: support onboarding, KYC and e-KYC, account servicing, and closure with clear status tracking.
- Security by design: encrypt sensitive data at rest and in transit, mask PII in logs, manage keys through HSM or a vault, and apply least-privilege access.
- Regulatory compliance: build to RBI guidelines, including data localization, audit trails, and NPCI operating rules, and align with PCI DSS where card data is involved.
- Controls: implement maker-checker approvals, transaction limits, velocity checks, and hooks for fraud and AML monitoring.
Maintaining Banking Products in Production
- Reconciliation: run daily automated reconciliation between internal ledgers, partner banks, NPCI, and settlement files, and resolve mismatches within agreed timelines.
- Settlement and batch jobs: own end-of-day and beginning-of-day processes, interest accrual, charges, and settlement runs, and make them safe to re-run.
- High availability: design for 24x7 uptime with no single point of failure, graceful degradation, and defin
