SSC CGL (graduate level central jobs)

CGL fills Group B and C posts in central government: income tax and GST inspector, assistant section officer, auditor, accountant, sub-inspector in CBI/NIA and more. It is the biggest graduate-level exam run by SSC. Posts range across ministries and cities.

Study

Any bachelor's degree; a few posts need specific subjects (e.g. Junior Statistical Officer needs maths/statistics).

Age

18-27, 18-30, 20-30 or 18-32 depending on the post. OBC +3, SC/ST +5.

Also

Some posts (e.g. inspector in CBIC, SI in CBI/NIA) have physical/medical standards.

How selection works

  1. SSC OTR and online application
  2. Tier 1 CBT (qualifying/screening)
  3. Tier 2 CBT (merit, includes computer and data entry skill test)
  4. Document verification and post preference

Pay

Level 4 to Level 8 depending on post (roughly Rs 25,500 to Rs 47,600 starting basic). Check the official notice ↗

Physical test

Only for some posts, e.g. CBIC/CBN inspector: men walk 1600 m in 15 min and cycle 8 km in 30 min; women walk 1 km in 20 min and cycle 3 km in 25 min. ↗

How to prepare

  • Maths (advanced: algebra, geometry, trigonometry) and English are the base of Tier 2.
  • Give Tier 2 at least as much time as Tier 1; merit is from Tier 2.
  • Practise the data entry speed test (DEST) if you want tax inspector posts.
  • Fill post preferences only after reading each post's work, place and physical needs.

Mistakes people make

  • Age limit differs by post; check each.
  • Skipping computer knowledge module, which is qualifying.
  • Preference order filled carelessly.
