Government School Teacher (TET + recruitment)

To teach classes 1-8 in government schools you must first pass a Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET or your state's TET); this is an eligibility certificate, not a job. The state then runs a separate recruitment. Central schools (KVS, NVS) have their own recruitment.

Study

Classes 1-5: 12th with D.El.Ed. Classes 6-8: graduate with D.El.Ed or B.Ed. Exact rules in the NCTE-based notification.

Age

CTET has no upper age limit. Recruitment age limits are set by each state. Check the official notice

Also

CTET pass mark 60% (general), 55% for reserved categories as per state/central policy. CTET certificate is valid for life.

How to prepare

  • Child development and pedagogy is common to both papers; master it first.
  • Study NCERT textbooks of the classes you will teach.
  • Language I and II papers test teaching of language, not only grammar.
  • Keep TET certificate and D.El.Ed/B.Ed marksheets ready for recruitment.

Mistakes people make

  • Thinking passing TET means a job.
  • Appearing for wrong paper for the classes you want.
  • Not registering on the state portal in time for recruitment.
In Maharashtra Maharashtra: first pass MAHATET or CTET, then the TAIT (Teacher Aptitude and Intelligence Test) conducted by the Maharashtra State Council of Examination, Pune. Recruitment is through the Pavitra portal (edustaff.maharashtra.gov.in) where you register with your TAIT score and fill school preferences; some posts are filled with interview.
